About Agricultural Development Bank Limited (ADBL)
Overview
Agricultural Development Bank Limited (ADBL) is one of Nepal's leading commercial banks with a strong legacy in agricultural finance, rural development, and institutional banking. Established in 1968 under the Agricultural Development Bank Nepal (ADBN) Act, 1967, the bank succeeded the former Cooperative Bank with the primary objective of providing institutional credit to increase agricultural production and productivity across Nepal.
In 1973, the Land Reform Savings Corporation was merged with ADBL, strengthening its role in supporting Nepal's agricultural and rural economy. Subsequent amendments to the founding Act expanded the bank's mandate, enabling it to provide credit to smallholder farmers through group liability lending, finance cottage and small-scale industries, and undertake commercial banking activities to mobilize domestic financial resources.
Agricultural Development Bank Limited is an autonomous financial institution in which the Government of Nepal is the majority shareholder. For more than three decades, ADBL has served as Nepal's premier rural credit institution, playing a significant role in expanding access to institutional finance throughout the country. At one stage, the bank contributed more than 67% of Nepal's institutional rural credit, reflecting its longstanding commitment to agricultural development and rural economic growth. Rural finance continues to remain one of ADBL's core areas of operation, while the bank has also been offering comprehensive commercial banking services since 1984.
Following the enactment of the Bank and Financial Institution Act (BAFIA), all previous financial institution-specific Acts, including the ADBN Act, 1967, were repealed. In accordance with BAFIA, Agricultural Development Bank Limited was incorporated as a public limited company on July 14, 2005. Today, ADBL operates as a Class "A" Commercial Bank under the legal framework of the Bank and Financial Institution Act (BAFIA) and the Companies Act, 2053, delivering a comprehensive range of retail, corporate, agricultural, SME, and digital banking services across Nepal.
With decades of experience, a nationwide presence, and a continued commitment to financial inclusion, sustainable agriculture, rural development, and modern banking, Agricultural Development Bank Limited remains a trusted financial partner for individuals, businesses, farmers, entrepreneurs, and institutions throughout Nepal.
