NRB Urges Citizens to Report Changes in Mobile Numbers to Financial Providers Immediately

KATHMANDU - Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has issued a crucial public notice warning citizens about the rising risks associated with outdated contact information in banking systems. The central bank's Financial Inclusivity and Customer Protection Division strongly urged consumers to immediately notify their respective financial service providers if they change their mobile numbers or email addresses.

The Growing Risk of Identity Theft

According to the official notice released by NRB under its financial literacy initiative, vital banking features such as mobile banking, internet banking, and digital wallets are directly tied to a customer's registered mobile number or email address.

The central bank warned that if a mobile phone is lost, stolen, or its SIM card is swapped without updating the bank, unauthorized individuals could gain access to sensitive financial accounts.

Official Warning from Nepal Rastra Bank:

"If you do not inform your financial service provider in time regarding a lost, stolen, or changed mobile number, there is a high risk of unauthorized individuals gaining access to your highly sensitive financial and account details."

Key Guidelines for Users

To minimize the risk of financial fraud, NRB has outlined major safety protocols for digital banking users:

  • Instant Reporting: In case of phone theft or a change in phone number, immediately alert the respective bank or digital wallet provider.
  • Registered SIMs Only: Always ensure that the SIM card used for mobile banking is legally registered under your own name.
  • Official Apps Only: Only use official, authorized banking and wallet applications downloaded from verified app stores.
