The institution was originally established as Sana Kisan Bikas Bank Ltd. on 6 July 2001 under the Companies Act, 2053 (1997). Following the implementation of the Bank and Financial Institutions Act (BAFIA), 2073, the institution was renamed Sana Kisan Bikas Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Ltd. (SKBBL) to align with Nepal's updated regulatory framework for microfinance institutions.

A significant milestone in its institutional development was the merger with Rural Microfinance Development Centre (RMDC), one of Nepal's established wholesale microfinance institutions.
