Governor Adhikari: Nepal Needs External Financial Sources to Mitigate Climate Change

Kathmandu - Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari has emphasized the need for external financial support to mitigate the impacts of climate change in Nepal. Speaking at an event organized by the Nepal Chartered Accountants on Friday, Governor Adhikari highlighted that the country requires approximately NPR 2 trillion annually to meet its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. He also noted that achieving the net-zero carbon emission target by 2045 would demand around $47 billion.

Adhikari stressed that while the government's financial responsibilities are increasing, domestic resources are insufficient to meet the country’s needs. He called for foreign loans and foreign direct investment (FDI) to bridge the financial gap. He further urged the government and citizens to have realistic expectations, aligning aspirations with practical financial capacities, and ensuring external investments are safeguarded.

The governor also pointed out the rising expectations of both the government and citizens, and the challenges posed by the high costs of infrastructure projects such as land acquisition and electricity transmission poles. He advised the government to make well-considered decisions and to remain mindful of the long-term impacts of policy choices.
